The shape of the cauldron is like a cauldron. The difference is, the bottom of the keron is flat, making it easy to place on the ground or floor. The diameter of the base is smaller than the top.
This kitchen tool is multifunctional. It can be used for “grossing” rice, a place for clean water, a place for washing dirty utensils, so it can be used as a water container when bathing a corpse. The name of the kitchen utensil is pengron. There are some people in Java who call it kemaron. There are two kinds of pengaron, namely big pengaron and small pengaron. For a small pengaron, residents of Parangtritis, Bantul Regency, call it news. It is called big pengaron if the diameter of the upper circle is about 50 cm, the height is 27 cm, and it is called small pengaron (kabaran) if the diameter of the upper circle is about 35 cm and the height is 19 cm.
In general, the form of pengaron is like a cauldron. The difference is, the bottom of the keron is flat, making it easy to place on the ground or floor. The diameter of the base is smaller than the top. Pengaron also resembles a cylinder. While the upper part is larger in diameter and has a circular lip about 5 cm wide. Pengaron is also generally made of clay or pottery. Pengaron is usually used after being burned, like other kitchen utensils made of clay.
Pengaron made of clay has the disadvantage of being easily broken. So if it’s broken, it means it can’t be used anymore because it can’t be patched. So the use of pengron must be extra careful, both during use, maintenance, and during storage. Meanwhile, for use when it is still new, so that it does not smell of soil, you can apply steps such as in the kitchen utensil cauldron, which is cleaned with water from starch, rice bran to coconut fiber.
Pengaron, one day can function to “gross” rice. Before the half-cooked rice is again “diadang” or cooked in the pan, the rice that has been cooked earlier is poured into the pengaron. Then pour boiling water until it overflows. Wait a moment until the water seeps into the rice until it becomes half cooked rice. “Ngaru” rice usually uses pengaron because it is resistant to hot water, can hold a lot, and can neutralize the taste of rice. In addition, in ancient times there were not many choices of containers, except for those made of earthenware. So the only place that is “fit” for “ngaru” rice is this pengaron.
When there were not as many buckets as there are today, pengaron became the main choice for residents to bathe their bodies. Usually there are several large pengaron lined up filled with clean water. Before being used to bathe the corpse, the clean water in the pengoron has been given Moringa leaves, flowers, and loose change.
Another function of the pengron is for clean water reservoirs, in addition to barrels. The size of the pengaron is smaller than the barrel. In addition, the pengaron is easy to move so it is widely used, especially when people have a celebration.
Pengaron is more practical to use for temporary water reservoirs. Once again, there were not many choices of water containers at that time because there were no water containers made of plastic and the like.
Sometimes the pengron also serves to wash dirty kitchen utensils.

The existence of pengaron has been recorded in the Javanese dictionary “Baosastra Java” by WJS Poerwadarminta (1939). On page 485, it is explained that the pengron is a kind of large vase. The vase is a place of water that is often used for baths in the past. Usually, every word recorded in the “Baoesastra Java” dictionary is taken from the tools or concepts used by the people at that time. No different from the term pengaron or kemaron. This means that before 1939, pengaron had become a common kitchen tool used by most households at that time.
Now this kitchen utensil has been pressed by similar utensils made of plastic and the like which are more durable, practical, and lighter. So don’t be surprised, nowadays it’s very difficult to find a pengron kitchen utensil on the market, because not many people are looking at it anymore. However, in the center of pottery making can still be found this object. Several cultural museums in Yogyakarta have made it a collection of ancient objects.
