Happy Saturday, Friends of GPS Wisata Indonesia, I can’t believe it’s been a month since we passed 2014. Hopefully whatever you wish for in 2014 will soon come true. On this Saturday we will provide an article about Batik Kediri, East Java. Batik is Indonesia’s original cultural heritage that we should be proud of and we need to participate in maintaining and preserving it. Batik is the identity of the Indonesian nation that reflects the spirit of Bhineka Tunggal Ika, different but still one firm stand. The city of Kediri is better known for its distinctive image as the city of tofu and getuk bananas. However, it turns out that Kediri has tremendous potential in the field of batik, in terms of product quality, Batik Kediri is not inferior to batik products from other regions.
The hallmark of Batik Kediri is the Batik Gumul motif, which is a batik motif that imitates the Simpang Lima Gumul (SLG) monument, a new icon of Kediri Regency which resembles the L’Arch D’triomph Monument in France. This batik motif is very rarely found and does not exist anywhere except in Kediri, because the SLG monument is only in Kediri Regency.

There is also a type of Batik Bolleches, which is a unique batik motif in the form of circles and dots, taken from the meaning of bolleches (Dutch) meaning a collection of dots or small balls applied with certain flowers or certain legendary motifs. This batik was made around 1980, after digging from the historical side of Kediri, archaeological heritage, and community development, finally Kediren Clothing was born, in the form of Bolleches Batik with the name Garuda Muka. This batik is highly sought after because its elegant motif matches the gentle and friendly personality of the Kediri residents. The two original batik motifs of Kediri Regency will always develop according to the times.
The main motif that is often displayed in Batik Kediri is the image of the Garuda Bird. In historical studies, the Garuda Bird is often referred to as the Advance Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. There are also those who say, Garuda Muka (Garuda Mukha) is the emblem of the Airlangga Kingdom. The combination of the Garuda image with the curved lines, tendrils and dots is very flexible. Batik colors are also very varied. Not surprisingly, this time batik is known as one of the typical souvenirs of Kediri. There are motifs of the Blooming Lotus Face, Garuda Muka Mukti, Garuda Muka Ukel, Garuda Muka Ukel and Garuda Muka Liris. All of them feature the Garuda Bird as the main icon. The difference is the flapping of the eagle’s wings and the point of view as well as the variety of flowers and tendrils.

The Garuda Muka Sekar Jagad motif is a motif that displays the figure of an eagle. On this batik there are pictures of boxes that represent the shape of tofu (Kediri produces tofu takwa). There are also dots as a depiction of gethuk (Kediri produces banana gethuk).

The Kediri Batik Center is located on Jl. KH Dewantoro 74 Sekoto, Badas Pare, Kediri. The center produces various types of written batik motifs, Sasirangan batik, jumputan, ikat batik, and others. Batik motifs can also be ordered according to what you want. Batik products from the Kediri batik craft center will always develop according to the times. Efforts that can be made by the local government are to require civil servants and school students to wear the Kediri Batik uniform on weekdays or school days.
Friends of GPS Wisata Indonesia can make Batik Kediri as one of your collections. Hope it is useful.
