A good leader according to Islam

Islam has written and regulated all affairs both in the world and in the hereafter in Islamic sources, namely Al Qu’an and As Sunnah. In the Qur’an and Sunnah it is stated that there are at least four criteria that must be possessed by a person as a condition to become a person a good leader according to Islam. All of them are collected in four characteristics possessed by the prophets / apostles as leaders of their people, namely:

  1. Shidiq, namely truth and sincerity in acting, speaking and acting in carrying out their duties. The opposite is a lie.
  2. Amanah, namely the belief that makes him maintain and take care of the best what was entrusted to him, both from the people he leads, even more so from Allah SWT. The opponent is a traitor.
  3. Fathonah, namely intelligence, competence, and reliability that gives birth to the ability to face and overcome problems that arise. The opponent is stupid.
  4. Tabligh, namely delivering honestly and responsibly for all actions taken (accountability and transparency). The opposite is covering up (lack) and protecting (fault).

An important point that is highly emphasized by Islam regarding leadership is that the orientation of leadership is not a power, but a “trust to serve”, a leadership that does not serve is a ruler, not a leader. The exemplary aspect occupies a central point in the charisma of a leader.
